Saying Farewell to hanseboot 09/27/2017
HMC and City to jointly organise new in-water boat show on the Elbe river
Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH (HMC) will discontinue its water sports trade fair hanseboot after the 2017 event but is planning to stage a new format on the Elbe river in future. “The ongoing consolidation process in the water sports market, triggered by the 2008 financial crisis, has had its negative consequences on hanseboot, as well, causing the exhibitor and visitor numbers to drop,” says Bernd Aufderheide, President and CEO of Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH. “Notwithstanding, Hamburg is and will always be an attractive venue for a water sports expo. Therefore HMC, the City of Hamburg and the German Boat and Shipbuilders Association DBSV, the inspirational body behind hanseboot, are jointly developing a new in-water boat show for Hamburg.”
The decision to discontinue hanseboot, an indoor trade fair, was made by HMC after careful consideration of all aspects, including commercial criteria. “We engaged in an intense dialogue with industry representatives in the process,” says Bernd Aufderheide. “Of course we all would like to keep this traditional trade fair alive, but we cannot allow ourselves to be guided by emotions alone.”
The new maritime event will enhance Hamburg’s rich portfolio of attractive events. “In developing the new concept we are watching the market very closely,” says Aufderheide. “In-water boat shows are very popular among exhibitors and visitors across Europe.” This definitely applies to the ‘hanseboot ancora boat show’ organised by Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH at the ancora Marina in Neustadt, State of Schleswig-Holstein.
“It is without doubt regrettable that hanseboot cannot be continued,” says Hamburg’s State Senator for Economic Affairs, Frank Horch. “The more I welcome the idea to organise an in-water boat show in future. This modern event format is ideally suited for Hamburg. After all, we are already hosting a number of successful in-water events, such as our Port Anniversary. I support the concept of organising a new water sports event in our city.”
As a farewell gift for the last hanseboot, Hamburg Messe und Congress is offering a special discount to all visitors: When the trade fair took place for the first time in 1961, visitors paid six Deutschmarks per entry ticket. The ticket price per person in 2017 will be the equivalent: 3 Euros.
