The history of the Royal Malta Yacht Club (RMYC) is rooted in the strong link between the inhabitants of Malta and the sea. Its membership is small, but it actively nurtures the sport and organizes one of yachting’s most inspiring races.
In 1968 the RMYC founded the Rolex Middle Sea Race. Influenced by the legend of the Fastnet Race, two Englishmen residing in Malta – Jimmy White and Alan Green, both members of the RORC and the RMYC – and two Maltese brothers – Paul and John Ripard, also RMYC members – sought to turn their passion for the sea into a competitive ocean race in the Mediterranean that would be as demanding as its peer.
Tracing a 600-nautical mile course around Sicily using islands as marks of the course was a stroke of genius. They created a race course steeped in mythology and history that encounters stunning geography and retains tactical challenges rarely matched elsewhere.
