Uncovered Episode 2


Episode 2 showcases the lead-up to the inaugural America’s Cup World Series event, with a visit to Cascais, Portugal with some of the people who’ll make it happen. Then it’s to Artemis CEO Paul Cayard, who has won everything there is to win in sailing, except an America’s Cup. We go home with him to San Francisco to find out where it all began and his quest to win the oldest trophy in international sport. Then, it’s back in Portugal with Loick Peyron and Team Energy as they sail the AC45 for the very first time. And finally, we’re in China and Korea — the Eastern-most frontier of the America’s Cup.

This week’s episode begins with the first America’s Cup World Series Event in Cascais Portugal where we follow the man who’s responsibility for making the event happen on the water. Next, we meet the teams who will be the center of the action. Then, it’s off to Auckland where we go back in time to see the makings of the AC45, including a traditional Maori blessing of the boat. And finally we’ll be there as the teams line up ahead of their very first race – a look behind-the-scenes as the athletes get prepared.

This week’s program begins with the inaugural America’s Cup World Series event in Cascais, Portugal aboard Green Comm Racing, the Spanish challenger as they compete in the first ever AC500 Speed Trial. Then, a day off from the sailing not just rest but also a focus on ocean conservation – join the teams as they help preserve the Cascais coastline. Next, it’s front and center with Geordie Shaver, America’s Cup commentator and former AC bowman, as he helps take America’s Cup TV live for the first time. Then we’re fresh off the race course, where Team Korea breaks down their racing after the beating America’s Cup winningest skipper, Russell Coutts.

America’s Cup Uncovered Episode 5 picks up at the first AC Match Race Championship, with Terry Hutchinson and Loick Peyron providing a behind-the-scenes view of the race in action. Next, meet Green Comm Racing’s “rockstar” Carrie Howe, the only female sailor in the America’s Cup World Series. Then listen to Aleph’s Alain Gautier and Philippe Ligot as they follow their team in the final winner-take-all race for the Cascais title. Finally, the teams pack up and get ready for Plymouth, the heart of the UK maritime industry and one of the most famous ports in the world.

America’s Cup Uncovered Episode 6 begins where the 34th America’s Cup will end – in San Francisco. Join America’s Cup Race Management CEO and Regatta Director Iain Murray as he flies high over the City and the racing area for the 2013 events. Then it’s onto Plymouth, where the locals share their excitement for the AC World Series Plymouth which begins September 10. Next it’s off to the Extreme RIB factory to see the production of the radical prototype media cats that made the AC World Series TV coverage so exciting on the water. Then, we get a taste of the AC45 from the guest racer’s eyes, riding shotgun with some of the best sailors in the world.

There’s an insight into the physiology of an America’s Cup athlete with Artemis Racing’s Dr Pete Cunningham and we catch up with some of the teams as they begin training on the south coast of England.

This week we meet Energy Team’s bowman Christophe André; he takes us through his rigorous training regime. In just one week Christophe, Energy Team, and the rest of the America’s Cup competitors will be racing in the 3rd of the inaugural America’s Cup World Series events in San Diego.

In San Diego we take a behind the scenes tour of the USS Midway. The Midway showcased cutting edge technology during its many years of service, soon the high tech AC45s will battle it out in front of the 972 foot vessel’s bow on San Diego Bay. Then back in San Francisco we go inside Pier 80 to get an exclusive glimpse at the work of the ORACLE Racing design team.
Follow by a trip up in the air with one of ACTV’s helicopter cameramen.

This week we meet the America’s Cup design agency, Designwerk, who is responsible for the look and feel of the America’s Cup on TV. The agency was tasked with capturing the new extreme sports look on screen, as well as creating the opening title sequence for use in live TV events, including AC Uncovered.

If San Francisco Bay provides the perfect conditions for sailing on the edge, the city’s infamous streets offer the ideal combination of gradient and gravity for Freeboarding, which is like snowboarding on city streets for adrenaline junkies. Extreme sports are a part of the culture in San Francisco. Bay Area resident and newly crowned Kiteboard World Champion Johnny Heineken recently had the chance to to ride side by side with ORACLE Racing while they were training off the shores of the city front.

Then we get the latest crew news from each of the America’s Cup teams as they prep for racing to start at the America’s Cup World Series San Diego. We check out the leader board going into our first US stop on the 2011-2012 America’s Cup World Series tour.

We also experience our first ever America’s Cup Healthy Ocean Project day, celebrating the connection between sailing and our desire for a clean and healthy ocean. AC Uncovered Episode 20 resumes the story of the inaugural year of the America’s Cup World Series with a look back to Plymouth where we witnessed stadium sailing in all its glory from The Hoe overlooking Plymouth Sound.
