The North Coast of Mallorca

Now that the summer has come to an end, sailors and boaters can enjoy one of the most beautiful places on the island of Majorca. This time of the year presents us the Indian Summer of San Miguel. Meteorologists put it down to basic changes in temperature that usually occur in September, however to the islanders, is more than that. It could be said that the Indian Summer of San Miguel are days of sunshine and warmth that occur towards the end of September and owes its name to the Saints Days of San Miguel which falls on 29th of September.

During this period, the island seems to be a lot less busy and relaxed due to the departure of a vast amount of tourists, which gives Mallorca a new perspective of real beauty that offers us this weather window to enjoy our boats and picturesque surroundings. Where? The north coast of Mallorca, which includes the bay of Alcudia, Pollensa and Formentor.

The bay of Pollensa is outlined by kilometres of lengthy but narrow beaches that exist due to past relief & erosion patterns. Sea conditions and wind patterns in the Bay of Pollensa are generally quite calm and provide boaters a safe playground for setting sail, fishing, soaking up the sun and enjoying the majestic & picture perfect views.

Sailing north away form the Bay of Pollensa, one will pass Formentor. Here you will find one of the most idyllic spots in Mallorca. Just like the other beaches of the bay, it is long and narrow with a pleasant difference of white sand and crystal clear water.

Formentor provides breath-taking views from all angles, though is rather special when arriving by boat, however it is very important to keep in mind that anchoring here is prohibited. If you want to spend the day in Formentor, you are required to moor on one of the available buoys provided. Currently, the moorings are managed by the “Proyecto Hombre” Association who will approach your vessel once you have tied up and request payment for the mooring. The price per day is very reasonable considering far-reaching social cause the money goes towards.

If sailors are in search of an anchorage which is bit smaller and tranquil, continue sailing north to the welcoming “Cove Murta”. Its ONLY drawback is its narrowness and overcrowding, depending on the season, however worth the visit. At any rate, the last week of September is known for being less busy.
