Groupama’s time in second place was one day 18 hours 43 minutes and 42 seconds.
And immediately we have reaction from Groupama 4 skipper Franck Cammas on Twitter: “Groupama 4 finish 2nd… Bravo to the team and bravo to Abu Dhabi!”
Sanya’s finishing time was one day 19 hours 38 hours and 29 seconds, which will be a satisfying result for skipper Mike Sanderson considering they are the only one of the three in an older generation Volvo Open 70. Interestingly, their time was also inside the time set by ICAP Leopard in 2007.
VIDEO: Record Breaking Fastnet Battle
(from volvooceanrace 16/08/2011 | Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing’s Azzam led home the three Volvo Open 70s in the Rolex Fastnet Race in a monohull record time of one day 18 hours 39 minutes, winning a thrilling duel with Groupama 4 in the battle of the two brand new boats, with Team Sanya in third.)
0600 GMT: Abu Dhabi and Groupama now have just around 15 nautical miles to go to the finish, with Azzam still just slightly ahead.
0430 GMT update: Groupama 4 rounded the Fastnet Rock a fraction ahead of Azzam late on Monday and the two boats remain close to one another, with around 30 miles to the finish line. Team Sanya are 20 miles further back.
Groupama had earlier rounded Bishop Rock first at approximately 0100 GM, with Abu Dhabi 13 minutes later and Sanya another hour behind. At the time they were doing a healthy 22 knots.
We’ll continue to post information here as the teams chase a possible monohull record. Remember, the current record stands at one day 20 hours 18 minutes.
There was a chilling reminder of the risks these sailors run, as George David’s Rambler 100 capsized after losing her keel bulb. All 21 people on board were rescued from the 100ft racing yacht in an operation coordinated by the Irish coast guard.
Here is the statement issued by the Royal Ocean Racing Club last night:
The yacht Rambler 100 has capsized between the Fastnet Rock and the Pantaenius Buoy. The Irish Coastguard services are coordinating the rescue. The Baltimore RNLI lifeboat is on the scene. Two Sikorsky helicopters have been scrambled and an Irish Naval vessel is en route to the scene of the accident.
All 21 crew have been rescued.
